    Action Comores

This is a voluntary conservation organisation working in the Comoros Islands (Comores), which are situated in the Western Indian Ocean between Madagascar and mainland Africa.

Action Comores logo Their primary objective is to help alleviate the environmental problems of the Comores through scientific research, direct conservation and environmental education. Action Comores has visited the Comores every year since 1992.

The flagship species of our project is Livingstone's flying fox (Pteropus livingstonii). Livingstone's flying fox is one of the rarest fruit bats in the world and is endemic to the Comores. Current population estimates suggest there are only around 400 individuals of this species left in the wild.


Australian Bat Lyssavirus Research

A CSIRO information sheet - in June 1996, a new virus was discovered in Australian bats. The virus was identified as a member of the lyssavirus group, and a close relative to common rabies found overseas.

Bats in AustraliaAustralian Museum

the Australian Museum has a guide to the 90 or so bat species in Australia. It features a clickable map and some lovely colour pictures of most species found there including details on roosts, diet and conservation.



Australian (S.E.) Bat Call Library

The intention of this call library is to create a central source of reference calls of south-eastern Australian bats for researchers and wildlife managers. It is hoped that other bat researchers will contribute to this library with their own recordings. The library contains bat calls, recorded while releasing the animals in the dark, using ANABAT detectors.

AUSTROP logoThe Australian Tropical Research Foundation located at Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia. Part of its work includes a campaign to protect flying foxes from fruit farmers. They welcome donations and there is even a membership category for "Screaming Enthusiasts".

Bat Cave @ Royal Ontario Museum

Bat Cave logoThis exhibit is based on a reconstruction of parts of St. Clair cave in Jamaica where you will find Jamaican Fruit Bats, Cuban Funnel-eared bats, West Indian Long-tongued bats, Macleay's Moustached bats, Parnell's Mousteached bats, Sooty Moustaced bats and West Indian Leaf-chinned bats. The staff of the Royal Ontario Museum first visited St. Clair cave in 1965 to collect bats. The field trip marked the beginning of the museum's research program on bats, still a major focus of the Mammalogy department.

Bat Ecology and Bioacoustics Laboratory

Bat World Sanctuary and Living Museum

 Bat World logoThis non-profit facility provides lifetime sanctuary for non-releasable bats, in simulated natural habitat flight cages. To date, over 75 bats, representing 12 species from around the world, have found refuge at Bat World. These include orphan bat pups, bats that have been confiscated from the illegal pet trade, bats used in laboratory research and bats that have suffered permanent injuries. The sanctuary also includes a rehabilitation station, which provides rescue, rehabilitation and release for hundreds of wild bats every year.


Bats: A resource for teachers and students

This is a site built by North American teachers for teachers and students. It includes such things as a bat quiz, book lists and general introductory materials.

Carlsbad Caverns

If you can make it to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, USA you may catch a few bats on the wing - each evening in the summer and autumn, about 500,000 Mexican Free-tailed bats fly from the cavern entrance to feed on insects. Bat flight talks are presented at the amphitheatre near the cave entrance beforehand.

Eurobat Secretariat

Eurobats logoThe Agreement on the Conservation of Bats in Europe, which came into force in 1994, at present numbers twenty-one European states among its Parties, from North, South, East and West.

The Agreement was set up under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, which recognises that endangered migratory-species can be properly protected only if activities are carried out over the entire migratory range of the species.

The Bat Agreement aims to protect all 37 species of bats identified in Europe, through legislation, education, conservation measures and international co-operation with Agreement members and with those who have not yet joined.
