Operation Bat update (Jan 2007, MS Word, 80Kb)

Kelvin Jones has taken up the role of Operation Bat Project Officer with the new National Wildlife Crime Unit. It had become apparent that Operation Bat wasn't effectively improving police responses to bat related incidents, and so Kelvin's role is to try to ensure that Operation Bat is effective within the police. Kelvin will work closely with BCT and bat workers, investigating what changes need to be made in order that satisfactory outcomes relating to bat related crimes are achieved. This is Kelvin's document which gives an overview of the role he has just taken up with the National Wildlife Crime Unit as project officer for Operation Bat. Whilst Kelvin personally will not be undertaking investigations, the unit does have two investigative officers on staff to assist police Wildlife Crime Officers with investigations.

Submitting bats for rabies testing - link to DEFRA website (Feb 2006, pdf, 168Kb)
This is a new form (BAT 1) that you should use if you are planning to submit a bat for rabies testing. It is particularly important to increase the number of submissions of species that are thought to be of particular concern - Daubenton's bats (that have tested positive for European Bat Lyssavirus EBLV2 in the UK) and serotines (that have not yet tested positive for EBLV in the UK but that have tested positive for EBLV1 in mainland Europe). Should you find any dead bats of these species please submit them for testing. This research is vital to improve understanding of the prevalence of rabies in bats in the UK which in turn is crucial for developing appropriate responses.
